How does a water chiller work

The operation of a water chiller is a continuous thermodynamic cycle designed to extract heat from a process and reject it into the environment. To understand how a water chiller works, it is best to view it as a four-stage journey of a refrigerant as it changes states between liquid and gas.

The Step-by-Step Working Process of a Water Chiller

Stage 1: The Evaporator (Heat Absorption)

The cycle begins here. The "process water" (the water that has picked up heat from your machinery or building) enters the evaporator. Inside, it circulates around tubes filled with a cold, low-pressure liquid refrigerant.

Stage 2: The Compressor (Energy Boost)

The low-pressure gas enters the compressor, which is the "heart" of the chiller system.

Stage 3: The Condenser (Heat Rejection)

Now that the refrigerant is hotter than the outside air or cooling water, it enters the condenser to get rid of that heat.

Stage 4: The Expansion Valve (Pressure Drop)

The final step is to prepare the refrigerant to absorb heat again. The high-pressure liquid travels to the expansion valve.
